Author Bill Bryson set to retire from writing - JOE.ie

Image
The beloved author said he has been "treating retirement as an experiment so far this year" and said the experiment has been "very successful". Best-selling author Bill Bryson, author of a number of popular travel, science, historical and language books, is set to hang up his pen for good. Advertisement Speaking to Times Radio, Bryson, 68, outlined how he had embarked upon retirement as "an experiment" in 2020 so far and said that it had been "very successful" to date. "I don't know how much of this is pandemic-related… I'm really quite enjoying not doing anything at all," Bryson said. "For the first time in literally decades I've been reading for pleasure and I'm really enjoying it. Whatever time is left to me on this planet I'd like to spend it indulging myself, rather than going out and trying to cover new territory." Bryson, who has worked as a journalist in the United States and B

Bill Bryson is retiring. Woe is us - Hindustan Times

Bill Bryson is retiring. Bill Bryson – who drove us across a lost continent (small-town America); took us on a cross-country trek across a "small island" (Britain); who turned our attention to the science of nearly everything, and held it there for over 15 years. Bryson, 68, says the lockdown's had him reading for pleasure for the first time in decades, and really enjoying it. "I'm really quite enjoying doing nothing at all," he said in a recent interview with Times Radio, London. "Whatever time is left to me on this planet, I'd like to spend it indulging myself… [and my] masses of grandchildren." Good for him, but woe is us. Who's going to collate the scientific discoveries of the 21st century into the next compact, hilarious and engaging book filled with fascinating factoids and origin stories? Fortunately, he's left us enough to chew on for a while. He's written 21 books on travel, science and language. A Short History of N

Steve Bostrom: Fulfilling life's ultimate quest | Regional News | kpvi.com - KPVI News 6

Steve Bostrom Let's marvel that we are here. In "A Short History of Nearly Everything," Bill Bryson wrote: "Every one of your forebears on both sides was attractive enough to find a mate, healthy enough to reproduce, and sufficiently blessed by fate and circumstances to live long enough to do so. Not one of your pertinent ancestors was squashed, devoured, drowned, starved, stranded, stuck fast, untimely wounded, or otherwise deflected from its life's quest of delivering a tiny charge of genetic material to the right partner at the right moment in order to perpetuate the only possible sequence of hereditary combinations that could result—eventually, astoundingly, and all too briefly—in you." Ponder that Bryson can write such words. Ponder that you can be stunned at who you are. Reading his words, I found amazement. But, some words troubled my heart and soul and mind. Challenging Bill Bryson First, contemplate: "Every one of

Bill Bryson says he's retiring – is he really putting away his pen? - The Guardian

Image
O h Bill! This isn't the kind of news we need now. The legendary Bill Bryson, purveyor of funny, insightful, warm-hearted books on everything from travel to popular science, for most of my life to date, has announced his retirement. The 68-year-old author told Times Radio: "I don't know how much of this is pandemic-related [but] I'm really quite enjoying not doing anything at all. For the first time in literally decades I've been reading for pleasure and I'm really enjoying it. Whatever time is left to me on this planet I'd like to spend it indulging myself, rather than going out and trying to cover new territory." He's not the first writer to announce plans to hang up his pen. Lee Child did so at the start of this year, revealing that he'd be handing Jack Reacher over to his brother Andrew. "I've been doing it 24 years now and I couldn't do it any more," he said. (The first book in that new collaboration is now out, and I

Meet the traditional wooden boat-builders of Zanzibar - Lonely Planet Travel News

The Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar lies off the east coast of Africa, comprising two large islands and a series of smaller islets. The bigger of the islands is officially called Unguja, though it's commonly known as Zanzibar. While crystal-clear waters lap its idyllic beaches, the island's bustling trade centre is a diverse melting-pot of Swahili, Arab and Indian influences. A fisherman crafts his boat. Photo by: Christopher Wilton-Steer Around four kilometres from this bustling hub is the fishing village of Maruhubi, and a former sultan's palace; another must-see for anyone visiting the island. In the village, locals enjoy a traditional way of life, with the men crafting fishing boats by hand. London-based photographer Christopher Wilton-Steer recently found himself on this beautiful part of the island, having visited Zanzibar as part of a local assignment. "I'm fascinated by other cultures and interested in photography that educates, demystifies, a

Tanzania’s COVID-denying leader urges prayer as cases climb - The Independent

Image
Tanzania's COVID-denying president is calling on citizens for three days of prayer to defeat unnamed "respiratory diseases" amid warnings that the country is seeing a deadly resurgence in infections. "Maybe we have wronged God somewhere," populist President John Magufuli told mourners at a funeral for his chief secretary, John Kijazi, on Friday. "Let us all repent." Magufuli has repeatedly claimed that Tanzania a country of some 60 million people, defeated COVID-19 with God's help. The government has not updated its number of coronavirus cases since April, and the health ministry has promoted unproven herbal remedies. Magufuli has questioned COVID-19 vaccines without offering evidence. But the local Catholic church, the U.S. Embassy and others have openly warned of a resurgence in cases. And this week the death of the vice president of the semi-autonomous island region of Zanzibar, Seif Sharif Hamad, brought widespread atten
