Herodotus: Histories & Greco-Persian Wars - History

Image
Early Life  Herodotus was born in about 485 B.C. in the Greek city of Halicarnassus, a lively commercial center on the southwestern coast of Asia Minor. He came from a wealthy and cosmopolitan Greek-Carian merchant family. (The Carians, of Minoan descent, had arrived in that part of Asia Minor before the Greeks had.) In the middle of the 6th century B.C., Halicarnassus became a satrapy, or province, of the Persian Empire and was ruled by the tyrant Lygdamis. Herodotus' family opposed Lygdamis' rule and was sent into exile on the island of Samos. When he was a young man, Herodotus returned briefly to Halicarnassus to take part in an abortive anti-Persian rebellion. After that, however, the writer never returned to his home city again. Did you know? In 443 B.C., Herodotus joined a group of Athenians who set out to colonize a city, Thurii, in southern Italy. He died there in around 425 B.C. Origins of 'The Histories'  Instead of settling in one place, Her...

Sign up for CNN's Wonder Theory science newsletter. Explore the universe with news on fascinating discoveries, scientific advancements and more . CNN  —  NASA and Texas-based company Axiom Space have revealed a new spacesuit design — and it could be these very suits that are eventually worn by the first woman and person of color to walk on the moon. The spacesuits unveiled by Axiom Space at Space Center Houston on Wednesday are prototypes, though the company says it will be delivering spacesuits that can be used for astronaut training by late summer. The company won a contract last year to produce the suits for NASA. The new design, which looked black with blue and orange detailing for the unveiling, appeared to take on a vastly different aesthetic than the puffy white suits worn by moonwalkers of the 20th century. However, Axiom Space noted in a news release that its...

Why are some Russians still in denial about their troubled past? - The Spectator

Image
Few books change your life but one that heavily influenced mine was Among the Russians (1983), Colin Thubron's travel book about the late Brezhnev-era USSR. Catching me as a 20 year-old, it launched me on a lifetime of living and travelling in the former Soviet Union. Returning in 1999 from a long trip to Minsk, Kazan and Volgograd I reread it, marvelling at how uncannily it evoked my own experience of the country. Other travel books merely informed you about Russia – this one, dense with metaphor and luminously described human encounters seemed, in its 200 or so pages, to transport you there and make you feel it. You couldn't quite remember afterwards whether the experiences were Thubron's or your own. Pronounced by Count Nikolai Tolstoy a 'magnificent achievement', lit by a strange magic, it was a foundational text for so many of us who went on to make Russian culture part of our lives. The trip on which the book was based took place in 1980, between the ...
