The Case for Expedia Narrowing the Profit Gap With Booking Holdings - Skift Travel News

Image
Skift Take In some ways, Expedia Group's potential narrowing of the take rate gap with Booking Holdings has a lot to do with Booking's strategic decisions — pushing more into the U.S. and expanding its lower-margin flights business. Dennis Schaal The traditional knock on Expedia Group in its matchup against rival Booking Holdings is that Booking has been way more profitable. And Booking can take those profits, plow them back into marketing, and win more market share. In a research report last week entitled, "EXPE 101: A Deep Dive on the Business, Industry & Model," Jake Fuller and Kevin Dolan of BTIG argued that Expedia is on the cusp of narrowing that profit gap. The report looks at the profit question in terms of EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) margin. In 2022, Expedia's EBITDA margin was 11.9% versus 31.3% at Booking Holdings. BTIG said Expedia is on t...

TikTokers are using this Google Flights trick to book cheap airfare — here’s how it works - CNBC

If you feel travel costs have ballooned to eye-watering heights this summer, it's not just in your head. According to NerdWallet's Travel Price Index, there's been an overall upward trend in the price of travel since March 2020 despite a few pandemic-related dips. The cost of travel is up 18% as of April 2023 since the start of the pandemic, and up 3% compared to costs in April 2022. However, TikTokers recently found a way to lower some of those travel costs, particularly when it comes to booking flights. And you don't even have to download any browser extensions or install new apps — all you need is Google Flights. How do you use Google Flights to find cheaper airfare? The Google Flights "trick" is simple, but does require some flexibility in terms of where and when you're willing to travel. I'm planning a trip with friends for Labor Day weekend, so hoped that this tip could save me some money despite being locked into a specific weekend. Here's h...

Traveling? 12 Tips to Navigate Flight Cancellations - MapQuest

Image
Travelers often assume that purchasing an airline ticket comes with certain guarantees, like actually boarding the flight, taking off or arriving at your destination — on time. The truth is, in the United States, airlines don't guarantee their schedules. They don't even guarantee you a spot on the plane because it's legal for them to sell more tickets than there are seats. But you paid for one, so what happens when the airline overbooks? You'll get your money back, right? Not necessarily. The only time an airline is legally bound to compensate you is if you're involuntarily bumped from an oversold domestic flight within the United States. On oversold flights, the Department of Transportation (DOT) requires airlines ask ticketed passengers to voluntarily give up their seats in exchange for some sort of compensation before they bump other passengers unwillingly. But...

How Your Real Flight Reservation Can Be Used to Scam You - WIRED

Image
How do you tell that your plane ticket is real? If it checks out on the airline's website, you're good to go, right? Don't be sure. Fraudsters are abusing a little-known but decades-old technicality in how airline reservations work to con people out of their cash. Mevonnie Ferguson, who lives in Kent in the UK, says she was scammed out of £994 ($1,267) by someone claiming to work at a travel agency called Infinity Global Travel. A single working mother of two daughters, Ferguson says she was sold what appeared to be a valid British Airways ticket from London to Kingston, Jamaica. When she looked up the reservation on BA's website using the confirmation number and her last name, it showed up valid and fine. But about two weeks after purchasing this ticket from Infinity Global Travel, and just days before her scheduled departure date, the reservation disappeared from BA's website without a trace. Ferguson, who also relayed her story to the UK's Channel 5, contact...

Tourism-supported working lands sustain a growing jaguar ... - Nature.com

Abstract Understanding large carnivore demography on human-dominated lands is a priority to inform conservation strategies, yet few studies examine long-term trends. Jaguars ( Panthera onca ) are one such species whose population trends and survival rates remain unknown across working lands. We integrated nine years of camera trap data and tourist photos to estimate jaguar density, survival, abundance, and probability of tourist sightings on a working ranch and tourism destination in Colombia. We found that abundance increased from five individuals in 2014 to 28 in 2022, and density increased from 1.88 ± 0.87 per 100 km 2 in 2014 to 3.80 ± 1.08 jaguars per 100 km 2 in 2022. The probability of a tourist viewing a jaguar increased from 0% in 2014 to 40% in 2020 before the Covid-19 pandemic. Our results are the first robust estimates of jaguar survival and abundance on working lands. Our findings highlight the importance of productive lands for jaguar conservation and suggest that a tou...
